About Medicare and Medicare Supplement Insurance

The Physicians Mutual Family, which includes the Physicians Mutual, Physicians Life, and Physicians Select Insurance Companies, has helped Americans find the right coverage at the right price.

Our customers' interests guide everything we do. This means you can have peace of mind knowing you're protected with us.

Providing outstanding customer service is how we do business. In fact, in 2022 Physicians Mutual Family Customer Satisfaction Survey revealed 95% of customers were satisfied with the service they received.*

Our Plan G Innovative Rider is an exclusive plan you won’t find anywhere else.1 It was designed to help our customers save money.

Here’s how it works: If you have medical expenses within the first three calendar years, you’ll pay your share of health care expenses up to a plan deductible. If you don’t go to the doctor often, you may not even reach your full deductible. After those three calendar years, the plan deductible goes away and the only deductible you’ll have is for Medicare Part B — and you’ll continue to save on premiums.2

Medicare Supplement Insurance can help cover medical expenses not covered by Medicare.

Medicare Supplement (or Medigap) insurance can help cover medical expenses not covered by Medicare. Because it pays in addition to your Medicare benefits, Medicare Supplement insurance can help reduce the amount of money you must pay on your own and can help protect your retirement savings.

The Basics

If Medicare does cover a service, you could still have out-of-pocket expenses you must pay such as deductibles, co-payments or coinsurance. Medicare Supplement insurance can help lower your out-of-pocket medical costs.

Plus:

  • It allows you to choose your own Medicare-approved doctors and hospitals — A referral is not needed by us, but always check with Medicare to see if service is covered or needs a referral.
  • Your coverage is guaranteed renewable as long as you pay your premiums on time.
  • Even if you move or travel within the U.S., your coverage stays with you.
  • If you have open enrollment or guaranteed issue rights, your coverage is guaranteed — there are no health questions to answer.

Know the best time to buy

The best time is during your Open Enrollment Period. Generally, it begins on the first day of the month in which you turn 65 or you are enrolled in Medicare Part B (persons eligible for Medicare due to disability may also qualify for open enrollment for Medicare Supplement insurance regardless of age). It lasts for six months, and you cannot be turned down during this time. After this period, your options may be limited.

Medicare is divided into four parts:

Part A — Hospital Insurance (Original Medicare)

  • Benefits help cover inpatient care in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, hospice and medically necessary home health care
  • Most people do not pay a premium

Part B — Medical Insurance (Original Medicare)

  • Benefits help cover services provided by doctors and other health care providers, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, home health care and some preventive services
  • Most people pay the standard Medicare Part B premium

Part C — Medicare Advantage (MA)

  • Offers health plans run by Medicare-approved insurance companies
  • Enrollment is optional and replaces Original Medicare
  • If you go with an MA plan, you can’t get Medicare Supplement insurance

Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage

  • Benefits help pay for prescription drug costs
  • Enrollment is voluntary
  • Plans are available through private insurance companies approved by Medicare
  • Premiums and benefits vary by plan

Even if you have Medicare, there may be costs you must pay on your own. Medicare Supplement insurance (also called Medigap) from Physicians Select can help. This is private insurance you can buy to help pay bills Medicare may not cover.
