The black and white of tuxedo cats

Read time: 3 minutes

Feeling upscale and sophisticated? Love the black and white look? If so, who can blame you. Tuxedos are the epitome of class. But we’re not talking formalwear here — we’re talking tuxedo cats. (Or “tuxies” for short.)

Just like their clothing namesake, tuxedo cats portray charm and a bit of elegance. With a black coat and white fur on the throat, chest, paws and belly, how can these cats not command love and respect?

So without further ado, let’s check out some fun facts about these stylish felines.

Their personality is super-friendly, not formal!

Anyone who has had the wonderful circumstance of having a tuxie will tell you. They’re intelligent, talkative, super sweet and affectionate. In fact, many tuxie owners have said their sweet felines are actually dog-like in nature … that’s how friendly they are!

They’re a color scheme, not a breed

Tuxies owe their famous look to random genetics. They’re evenly male or female and come in a variety of breeds including Maine Coon, British Shorthair, Scottish Fold, American Shorthair, Norwegian Forest Cat, Persian and Turkish Angora. And since they’re not an actual breed, their coats can be long, short, shaggy or silky.

Their color is also called piebald

Their distinctive bicolor is also called piebald. If you happen to see a tuxie sporting a black patch on a white chest then he is a black-tie cat. Tuxies can also be gray or tabby with white markings, as well.

Ancient Egyptians loved them

Cats were highly revered and worshipped as gods by the Egyptians. That’s why cats were often seen in royal tombs, goldsmithing and hieroglyphics. It’s said that 70% of the cats in these ancient depictions were tuxedo cats.

Given their keen sense of style and wonderful personalities, it’s easy to see why tuxedo cats are the charm of the feline world.
