Four factors to consider when choosing your next dentist
One of the most frequent questions our service areas receive is “Can you help me find a new dentist?”
If it’s been a while since you’ve been to the dentist, or you’ve recently moved, here are some tips from our experts.
Cost/insurance/network savings
Here are a few quick tips if you already have dental insurance …
-
Check with your carrier to see if they have a preferred provider network that lists its most cost-effective dentists. Often, this can offer substantial savings.
-
Confirm a prospective dental practice accepts your insurance … ideally before your visit. If they’re not sure, ask them to check with your insurance carrier — the customer service number is generally on the back of your ID card. “Some dental offices mistakenly confuse group dental insurance policies with stand-alone individual dental policies,” said Angie B., manager of customer service. “Sometimes, when the staff doesn’t recognize the name of the insurance company or the ID card, they say their practice doesn’t accept that insurance.”
If your dentist isn’t in your insurance carrier’s network, it doesn’t mean you have to change dentists. Your insurance company may still cover the cost when you see your preferred dentist. Some companies pay set dollar amounts toward covered services from any dentist before network discounts are applied.
“You can also ask your dentist to join the network or nominate him or her yourself,” Angie said.
Location
Finding a dentist that’s close to your home and easily accessible is an important consideration, especially if you don’t drive, don’t want to drive 45 minutes to your dentist, or have transportation readily available.
-
Work with your insurance company or someone you trust to help you find a good dentist that works for your needs if you’re concerned about getting to the dentist’s office with relative ease.
Trustworthiness
Just as with any other medical professional, trust is an important factor when choosing a dentist. Here are a few questions to consider to help you.
- Is the dentist strongly referred by family, friends or coworkers?
- Is the dentist well-known for high-quality care at good prices?
- Does he or she have good online reviews from current and former patients?
If you can answer yes to these, you may have found your dentist.
Meet and greet
Once you’ve narrowed down your search, schedule a consultation appointment or phone call with the dentist and staff.
Here are some ways to get the most from your conversation.
- Ask specific questions about your dental health. You can bring your records (or have them sent beforehand) so the dentist can see your dental history.
- Ask how the dental office handles emergencies outside regular office hours.
- Make sure the dental office staff is familiar with your dental plan (if you have it).
- Ask about financing options, such as payment plans, if you don’t have dental insurance.
- Be sure to tell him or her of your past dental experiences and concerns, including anxiety. A trusted, dedicated dentist is part of your total health care team and will be happy to answer all your questions.
