3 factors to consider when choosing a new dentist
One of the most frequent questions our service areas receive is “Can you help me find a new dentist?”
Here are some tips from our experts at Physicians Mutual Insurance Company.
1Cost/insurance/network savings
Cost/insurance/network savings
Here are a few quick tips if you already have dental insurance ...
- Check with your carrier to see if they have a preferred provider network that lists its most cost-effective dentists. Often, this can offer substantial savings.
- Confirm a prospective dental practice accepts your insurance … ideally before your visit. If they’re unsure, ask them to reach out to your insurance provider — the customer service number is typically on the back of your ID card. “Dental offices sometimes confuse group insurance plans with individual ones,” explained Bernie C., director of customer service. “If the staff doesn’t recognize the insurance company or ID card, they might mistakenly tell you the practice doesn’t accept it.”
If your dentist isn’t in your insurance carrier’s network, it doesn’t mean you have to change dentists. Your insurance company may still cover the cost when you see your preferred dentist.
2Trustworthiness
Trustworthiness
Just as with any other medical professional, trust is an important factor when choosing a dentist.
Here are a few questions to consider to help you.
- Is the dentist strongly referred by family, friends or coworkers?
- Is the dentist well-known for high-quality care at good prices?
- Does he or she have good online reviews from current and former patients?
If you can answer yes to these, you may have found your dentist.
3Meet and greet

Once you’ve narrowed down your search, schedule a consultation appointment or phone call with the dentist and staff.
Here are some ways to get the most from your conversation.
- Ask specific questions about your dental health. You can have your records sent beforehand so the dentist can see your dental history.
- Ask how the dental office handles emergencies outside regular office hours.
- Make sure the dental office staff is familiar with your dental plan (if you have one).
- Ask about financing options, such as payment plans, if you don’t have dental insurance.
- Be sure to tell him or her of your past dental experiences and concerns, including anxiety.
