Edwin E. Elliott establishes Physicians Casualty Association on February 15, 1902 in his home in Omaha, Nebraska. With its mission to provide health insurance for physicians, surgeons and dentists, the Company issues its first policy on April 10.

Physicians Health Association of America is formed to provide additional customer protection.

1914
Edwin E. Elliott’s son, Loring, joins the Company.
1918
A worldwide influenza epidemic strikes, ultimately taking 20 million lives, including 548,000 Americans. The financial loss resulting from the surge of claims is staggering. Our Company’s quarterly report states, “Never in the history of sickness insurance has there been such a number of claims reported by all companies as during the last six weeks, due to the prevailing epidemic.” Nevertheless, our Company honors its commitments, selling assets and taking out loans until every single claim is paid.

Thanks to steady growth, our Company occupies the entire fourth floor of the First National Bank building in downtown Omaha.

1939
In addition to providing disability coverage, we begin offering hospital insurance. Founder Edwin E. Elliott later recalled he was “not quite sold on hospital insurance,” but his son Loring was.
1943
Loring Elliott succeeds his father as the Company’s Secretary and Treasurer.

1961
Frederick T. Rahn is hired as Executive Vice President.

The Board of Directors votes to expand membership beyond doctors and dentists to the general public.
1961–1962
Physicians Casualty Association and Physicians Health Association merge and “mutualize,” becoming Physicians Mutual Insurance Company. From this point on, customers share in the ownership of the Company.
1962
The Company moves from downtown Omaha to the Doctor’s Building at 42nd and Dodge Street.

Our first direct mail solicitation to the general public is delivered on August 31.

The number of customers grows from 12,000 in 1961 to more than one million.

We have 40 employees and an annual premium income of $12 million.

1966
The Company purchases the Doctor’s Building and occupies the entire space.
1967
Ground is broken on a seven-story structure adjoining the Company’s main building.

The Agency Group is formed, allowing the Company to begin offering insurance products and services through a dedicated force of licensed, professional agents.
1969
Frederick T. Rahn is named President.

A new logo is adopted to promote the Company brand. The logo resembles a caduceus, symbolic of the medical system.

Physicians Life Insurance Company is formed as a wholly owned subsidiary of Physicians Mutual Insurance Company to provide life insurance protection.

The Company has approximately 400 employees and premium income of $70 million.
1974
President Frederick T. Rahn dies tragically in an automobile accident. Robert A. Reed succeeds Mr. Rahn as President.
1978
The Company’s premium income surpasses $100 million.
1980
We adopt a new slogan — We’re here when you need us.® — to emphasize our reliability and service.

The Company moves to its new headquarters on 2600 Dodge Street, where it employs more than 800 people.
1996
Our first Internet home page is launched in August.

2002
We celebrate our 100-year anniversary, marking a century of trusted service to millions of Americans.
2003
The Company launches an ongoing initiative to develop customer-focused business processes and technologies.
2004
Physicians Mutual Insurance Company and Physicians Life Insurance Company become known as the Physicians Mutual® family. A new corporate logo and refreshed brand identity are introduced. The new “infinity loop” logo symbolizes our everlasting commitment to customers, employees, agents and business partners.
2005
The Company launches its Integrated Health Portfolio (IHP), a combination of some of our most reliable health insurance products, to help protect the growing number of uninsured and underserved Americans.
2007
The Company has over 1,100 employees in our Home Office and a total premium income of over $600 million.
